Xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth, is a condition that affects many individuals and can have significant repercussions on oral health. At Beaumaris Dental, we recognize the multifaceted causes of xerostomia and are committed to providing comprehensive solutions to enhance your oral well-being. Join us as we delve into the causes, treatments, and potential consequences of dry mouth.
Causes of Xerostomia:
Dry mouth can be triggered by various factors including, but not limited to, side effects of medications, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, mouth breathing, nerve damage, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions like Sjogren's disease. This condition arises when the salivary glands fail to produce enough saliva, leading to a persistently dry and uncomfortable sensation in the mouth.
Treatments for Xerostomia:
Addressing xerostomia may involve a holistic as well as a multidisciplinary approach. Our team at Beaumaris Dental recommends the following strategies to manage and alleviate dry mouth symptoms:
Stay Hydrated: Increase your water intake to maintain moisture in the mouth. Be careful adding citrus (such as lemon wedges) to the water as this will increase acidity in an already dry environment and make the enamel softer.
Consult with your Physician: Discuss your medications with your medical doctor to explore potential alternatives or adjustments.
Schedule Regular Dental Visits: Schedule routine dental check-ups to monitor and address any oral health issues that may arise. At these appointments we will be able to support you with your oral health needs and any of your concerns.
Biotene Products: Consider using Biotene products, such as mouth sprays, mouth rinses or tooth gel to stimulate saliva production. Although Xylitol products work well, they need to be used with caution as they have been recently observed to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. Using mouth rinses and toothpastes may be safer than mints and candies that are consumed because you do not swallow it. There is not a lot of data at this point. Use with caution.
Dietary Changes: It is important to limit sugary, acidic and sticky food and beverages as the saliva will have poor buffering capabilities while suffering from xerostomia.
Referral for a Sleep Study: Dry mouth can be a consequence of open mouth breathing, snoring and even oral sleep apnea.
Fluoride trays, high pH toothpastes, bicarbonate rinses: These are several options of adjunct therapies, some more natural.
Consequences of Untreated Xerostomia:
Failure to address xerostomia can lead to several oral health complications, including:
Root Caries: Dry mouth creates an environment conducive to tooth decay, particularly affecting the tooth roots.
Gum Disease: Reduced saliva flow increases the risk of gum inflammation and periodontal disease.
Halitosis: Insufficient saliva allows bacteria to thrive, leading to persistent bad breath.
Poor Digestion: Saliva plays a crucial role in the initial stages of digestion, and its deficiency can impact the digestive process.
Difficulty Chewing: Dry mouth can make chewing and swallowing food more challenging.
