Title: Unveiling the Culprits: Understanding the Causes of inflammation.

Inflammation, a complex biological response, plays a crucial role in the body's defense mechanisms and response to injury. However, when it becomes chronic, it can lead to various health issues. At Beaumaris Dental, we recognize the multifaceted nature of inflammation and its impact on oral and overall health. Join us as we explore some common causes of inflammation, shedding light on how addressing these factors can contribute to a healthier, more balanced life.

  1. Periodontal Disease:

One of the primary causes of inflammation in the oral cavity is periodontal disease. The chronic inflammation resulting from gum disease not only affects the gums but can also contribute to systemic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease etc. With periodontal disease we see bleeding of the gums which allows the oral bacteria to be able to get into the blood stream and  travel around the body influencing  overall health. Regular dental check-ups and diligent oral hygiene practices are crucial in preventing and managing periodontal disease.

  1. Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)/ Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA):

Disruptions in sleep patterns, particularly those associated with SDB and OSA, can trigger inflammation in the body. The compromised airflow during sleep can lead to oxygen deprivation, activating inflammatory pathways, leading to daytime sleepiness and other health related issues. Addressing sleep-related issues not only improves overall well-being but also supports oral health as oral microbiome can be altered in mouth breathers, tonsils can be more inflamed and tissues can become very dry in the mouth. At Beaumaris Dental we screen patients for potential sleep related issues and we refer patients for a sleep study. We understand that sometimes a patient will see their dentist more often than their primary care physician and we may need to be the ones that recognize the signs and symptoms of SDB.

  1. Environmental Toxins:

Exposure to environmental toxins, whether through air pollution, chemicals, or other pollutants, can contribute to chronic inflammation. Being mindful of environmental factors and taking steps to minimize exposure can aid in reducing the inflammatory burden on the body. Some small changes may be to minimize usage of Teflon cookware, using an air filtration device or even adding a water filtration system in the house. At Beaumaris Dental we are prepared to have conversations with our patients who would like to minimize Fluoride exposure, remove mercury fillings or even start using floss free from PTFA’s and forever chemicals.

  1. Inflammatory Diet:

The food we consume plays a pivotal role in determining our inflammatory status. Diets high in processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats can contribute to chronic inflammation. Embracing an anti-inflammatory diet rich in organic fruits, vegetables, grass fed meats free from antibiotics and whole foods can help mitigate inflammation and promote overall health. We want to lower oxidative stress by consuming anti-oxidants, glutathione (cruciferous and sulforaphanes), polyphenols (blueberries, Raspberries etc). We also want to improve Gut health by eating more fermented foods, probiotics, fiber and bone broth.

  1. Stress, Childhood Trauma, Anxiety, Unresolved Trauma:

Psychosocial factors such as stress, childhood trauma, anxiety, and unresolved trauma can have a profound impact on inflammation. The body's stress response activates inflammatory pathways, and chronic exposure can lead to persistent inflammation. Incorporating stress-management techniques and seeking support for unresolved emotional issues are essential steps in promoting a healthier, inflammation-resistant lifestyle.

 6. Sedentary Lifestyle

This leads to weight gain, mood changes, muscle wasting and poor circulation. The key is movement….we need to get up and move. Walk, stretch, work out, bike ride, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park a bit further away from the door,  are a few examples of how to get moving! Get a fit bit and track your progress…this will give you motivation.

At Beaumaris Dental, we emphasize a holistic approach to oral health. Our team recognizes the intricate connections between oral and systemic well-being. By addressing the root causes of inflammation, we strive to provide comprehensive care that goes beyond traditional dental practices.
